Civil War Trails in North Carolina

The Macon County Historical Society and the Town of Frankin, along with the UDC and SCV are participating in the Civil War Trails Program. During the month of December 2006 two interpretive signs were installed in Franklin. The first is in the Memory Garden at the museum, while the second was installed at the Macon County Courthouse. The sign at the museum highlights Thomas's Legion, with photos of William Holland Thomas, Chuttahsotee's Rifle and Macon County Confederate Veterans at a reunion in Macon county in the 1900's and narrative.

The courthouse display highlights one of the last surrenders east of the Mississippi. This surrender occured at Dixie Hall, which was situated on the current courthouse site. Photos of Stephen Whittaker, George W Kirk, and Dixie Hall are displayed.

May 12, 2007 is tentatively set as the date to dedicate these markers. This will be an event you don't want to miss. A color guard will be present, followed by an unveiling ceremony. Refreshments will be served. Come learn more about our shared past.

The Civil War Trails Program is a multi-state public education program which provides interpretations of local events that did not always make the history books. You can visit their website at Civil War Trails
