If you wonder why your ancestor married in Georgia, it may be because, in 1921, the North Carolina legislature passed a law requiring certificates of good health from physicians for both parties. In 1933 this law was repealed but new regulations were put in place that required the groom to file an affidavit to the effect that he did not have active tuberculosis or any veneral disease and had not had either for two years prior to filing an application for a marriage license. The bride was not required to file. In addition it was required that the marriage of any North Carolina resident out of state be filed in the home county of the groom. The fee for filing and indexing was 50 cents. Failure to file did not invalidate the marriage.
