Photos from the Dedication of the NC Civil War Trails Interpretive Markers

The Macon County Historical Society was proud to host the dedication of two NC Civil War Trails Interpretive Markers.

The Ceremony was held at the Museum and began at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 12, 2007.

The interpretive marker at the museum features Thomas's Legion, with photos of William Holland Thomas, Chuttahsotee's Rifle and Macon County Confederate Veterans at a reunion in Macon County in the 1900's and narrative.

The courthouse display features one of the last surrenders east of the Mississippi. This surrender occurred at Dixie Hall, which was situated on the current courthouse site. Photos of Stephen Whittaker, George W Kirk, and Dixie Hall are displayed.

Confederate Monument, Rankin Square, Franklin, NC

  • Period music and complimentary refreshments provided by the Historical Museum.
  • Descendants of the protagonists of the surrender of 1865 were at the dedication.
  • Gem dig for children was sponsored by the Gem & Mineral Museum.
  • Downtown merchants held sidewalk sale.
  • No charge for any of the events

Activities:

  • Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Confederate Monument by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
  • Civil War Re-Enactors re-enacted the Last Surrender that took place at Dixie Hall on May 12, 1865 when Colonel George W Kirk accepted Captain Stephen Whitaker's surrender in Franklin, NC.
  • Guest Speaker was Sion H Harrington, III, Military Archivist of the North Carolina Division of Historical Resources..
  • Author Charles Frazier was in attendance and at 1:00 PM Books Unlimited hosted his book signing at the Macon County Library.
