Flora and fauna

Vegetation varies greatly throughout the state, primarily because of geographic and climatic differences among the three major regions. However, changes caused by human habitation may be becoming just as important a factor in determining the state’s biodiversity. Although more than half of the state is still covered by forests, many trees have been cut down and burned, not only affecting animal life by altering important habitats, but also contributing to soil erosion and leaching.

A wide range of plants are found in North Carolina, including many species of hardwoods. Red spruces and balsamic firs grow in the mountains, and subtropical palmetto and carnivorous lilies (genus Sarracenia ) and venus flycatcher ( Dionaea muscipula ) grow in southern coastal areas.

The general fauna of North America, including rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, opossums, deer, and bears and feral cats, live within the state. Since the late 1980s there have been efforts to bring the nearly extinct red wolf back to North Carolina. The most common birds are cardinals, wrens, mockingbirds, tits, and many varieties of woodpeckers and songbirds. Freshwater fish such as bluegills, crappie, bass, and sunfish are common in the interior. Lake trout and rainbow trout are found in the mountains.
